Toledo crash: Rider dies in failed overtaking attempt in western Cebu

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 49-year-old man died after the motorcycle he was driving collided head-on with a six-wheeler truck on Thursday afternoon, June 4, in Toledo City in western Cebu.
According to the initial investigation, the motorcycle rider was trying to overtake another vehicle when he slammed into the 6-wheeler truck traveling on the opposite lane.

The fatal crash happened at around 4:25 p.m. along the national highway in the city’s Barangay Ilihan.
Fatal overtaking attempt
According to a police report from the Toledo City Police Station, the victim was identified as Faustino Macaday Kilag, 49, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, Toledo City.
Authorities said Kilag was driving a Suzuki Raider motorcycle and was traveling from Barangay DAS toward Barangay Poblacion.

At the same time, the white Isuzu 6-wheeler dropside truck, which was driven by 33-year-old Jorvic Macan Veloso of Barangay Tajao, Pinamungajan town in southwestern Cebu, was traveling in the opposite direction from Pinamungajan toward Naga City in southern Cebu.
Based on the account of witness Allan Magallon Algunas, Kilag was trying to overtake another vehicle using the center lane when he noticed the approaching truck.
Police said that when he saw the approaching truck, the motorcycle rider suddenly lost control of his motorcycle and swerved into the lane of the oncoming truck, resulting in the fatal crash.

The impact threw Kilag onto the concrete pavement, causing fatal injuries.
He was rushed to Toledo City Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Driver taken into custody
Following the incident, Veloso was placed under temporary police custody while authorities investigated the fatal collision.
Police initially considered filing a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
However, the driver was released later that same day after the victim’s family decided not to pursue charges.
Settlement reached
Authorities said the victim’s family and the driver of the utility vehicle reached a settlement, with Veloso agreeing to shoulder the burial expenses of the deceased.
