CEBU CITY, Philippines — A man was wounded after being shot by a townmate allegedly driven by a long-standing personal grudge in Barangay Canbanua, Argao town, on Friday evening, June 12, 2026.

The victim was identified as Jayford Earl Villegas, of legal age, single, and a resident of Barangay Canbanua.

The suspect, identified as Felipe Albite, 40, of Barangay Talaga, Argao, was arrested shortly after the incident.

According to the investigation by the Argao Municipal Police Station, authorities received a report from a concerned citizen who heard gunshots in the area.

Police immediately responded and, upon arriving at the scene, found Villegas lying on the ground and bleeding from gunshot wounds.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his left abdomen and leg and was rushed to the Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.

While undergoing treatment, Villegas identified Albite as the person who shot him.

This prompted police to launch a hot pursuit operation, which led to the suspect’s arrest in Barangay Talaga.

Albite was subsequently brought to the hospital, where the victim positively identified him.

Investigators are looking into a personal grudge as the motive behind the shooting. Police said Albite had previously served as a witness in theft cases filed against Villegas.

Authorities said Villegas had been accused of theft in their community. The suspect’s mother and sibling had earlier filed theft complaints against him, with Albite acting as a witness.

Police also received information that after Villegas was released from jail, he allegedly chased Albite while armed with a knife.

The two reportedly had several confrontations before the shooting.

Investigators said Albite allegedly became enraged after repeated confrontations and challenges to a fistfight from the victim, prompting him to shoot Villegas.

The suspect is expected to face a charge of frustrated murder.
