Huey and partner move on

FILIPINO-AMERICAN Treat Huey and his doubles partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus continued their fairytale run as they shocked the fourth-seeded tandem of Rohan Bopana and Florin Mergea, 6-4, 6-3, in the Australian Open Men’s Doubles competition yesterday in Melbourne, Australia.

The 14th-ranked duo of Mirnyi and Huey exploited on the costly errors of their opponents, who recorded eight double faults throughout the course of the game.

With the victory, Huey and Mirnyi are set to battle Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic and Canadian ace netter Daniel Nestor, who scored a come-from-behind victory against the Spanish tandem of Pablo Anduja and Pablo Busta, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Filipino netter AJ Lim, who is seeded as the world’s 17th best junior tennis player, suffered an early exit in the tournament after losing to 44th-ranked

Guel Batrina, 4-6, 0-6, in the opening round of the juniors competition.
