As part of its efforts to reduce the impact of climate change, the Cebu Alliance of Mass Communication Students (CAMS) conducted a tree planting activity in Barangay Pung-ol Sibugay, Cebu City last July 30.
CAMS is composed of Mass Communication students from the different universities and colleges in Metro Cebu, such as St. Theresa’s College, Cebu Institute of Technology University, University of the Philippines, Cebu Normal University, University of the Visayas, Benedicto College and the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
At least 200 Mahogany trees were planted. When fully grown, the trees could reach heights of at least 150 feet and have trunks that are six feet in diameter.
The activity was in cooperation with the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) and ABS-CBN Cebu.
It was also the kickoff activity of TV Patrol Central Visayas’ 28th anniversary with their segment Ecopatrol which focuses on stories that care for the environment.
“There is a need to plant more trees to secure the water supply of Metro Cebu for future generations,” said MCWD spokesperson Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara.
Trees release oxygen to sustain human beings, and help remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air which cools the earth.
CAMS president Mark Roland Romas said the activity is a good start for the organization and its long-term objectives.
“Maayo gyud nga magkahiusa ta para sa kaayohan sa kalikupan (It is good that we unite for the welfare of the environment),” Romas added. /by USJ-R Communication student Ashlee Love Marzon
