Tumulak alarmed over butane-caused explosion

Acting Cebu City Vice Mayor David Tumulak voiced alarm over the explosion caused by refilled-butane gas canisters that were destroyed in a collision between a delivery truck and a school bus in Talisay City Wednesday morning.

“Butane is supposed to be used once only and not to be refilled.” Tumulak, who authored an ordinance prohibiting refilling of butane canisters said.

Tumulak called on the Department of Energy (DOE), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to stop the operations of backyard refilling stations.

These backyard butane refilling stations are illegal, Tumulak said. Since 2010, 44 butane-related fire incidents in Cebu City were reported. The highest was last year in which the city recorded 22 cases.
