EVEN if you are the longest reigning Filipino world boxing champion, a first fight in the higher weight division will always be tricky.
But worry no more, two division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes is expected not just to win but also shine in his 112lbs debut on Sept. 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California.
This was promised by veteran boxing trainer Edmund Villamor who is overseeing Nietes’ training camp.
Villamor said that his ward is in great physical condition with just a little more than a month from Nietes’ (38-1-4, 22 KOs) first fight in the regular flyweight division against former world champion Edgar Sosa (52-0, 30 KOs) o Mexico.
Nietes is still 4lbs overweight according to Villamor but the latter is confident his ward will meet the required weight on fight night.
Villamor also added that they are ready for Sosa, saying their main focus is to be able to adjust for whatever Sosa is going to bring to the table.
“Donnie wanted to start training early, which was better for us, because this just goes to show that he is looking forward for this new challenge and will fight not just to win, but to give a great show,” said Villamor. “This will surely be a tough fight and something the fans would surely enjoy, because both fighters want to prove something. For Donnie, that he has the skills to possibly dominate another weight division, and for Sosa, that he is still a force to reeckon with,” added Villamor.
Also featured in the fight card promoted by ALA Promotions International are reigning and unbeaten WBO International featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo (14-0,11 KOs) and former world title contender “King” Arthur Villanueva (29-1,15 KOs) in the undercard.
