The rejuvenated Don Bosco Greywolves continued to hold perfection in the palm of their hands after they ran the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers to the ground, 89–71, in the 16th Cesafi juniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

No longer the wimp of a team that most pundits have been accustomed to in recent years, the Greywolves started to pull away for good late in the second quarter before completely dominating the rest of the second half to capture their third win in as many games.

More importantly, the victory promptly placed Don Bosco at the top of the standings beside the idle University of Cebu Baby Webmasters at 3-0 (win-loss).

USPF fell to 0-3.

Grenal Malubay shot the lights out for the Greywolves as he scored 21 points while Jomari Ranuco provided 12 markers. Athletic big man Miguel dela Torre flirted with a double-double as he finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Most of the first half saw both teams engaged in a fierce test of wills with neither squad giving the other an inch. Don Bosco held a precarious 32-29 lead but extended it to 13, 42-29, after it finished the second with an 11-0 blast anchored on the torrid scoring of Malubay and Christian Boyboy.

Malubay continued to drop point after point in the third to fuel Don Bosco’s breakaway. They eventually erected a 70-49 lead heading to the last canto, one that was never threatened until the final buzzer.

In the first match, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons won their third in a row after they scraped past the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 68-59.

Losers of their first match against Southwestern University-Phinma, CEC has since found a groove and lorded over USJ-R behind an even attack which had four different players scoring in double-figures led by James Tempra’s 14 points and nine rebounds.

Ralph Gonzaga chipped in 13 while Dave Manlapat nearly had a rare triple-double of 12 points, nine boards and seven steals.

In the final juniors game of the afternoon, the three-time defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles throttled the University of San Carlos, 74-27, to tie CEC in second place at 3-1.

Meanwhile in the lone seniors game of the day, the UC Webmasters evened their record up at 2-2 with a 61-52 conquest of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats. Clint Suelto and Mark Olmilla led the Webmasters in scoring with 11 and 10, respectively.

For the Wildcats, their season continued to spiral out of control as they lost their fourth straight match.
