For veteran boxing promoter Samson Gello-ani, it’s not a question of whether Johnriel “Cuadro Alas” Casimero will win against Briton Charlie Edwards, but how.
The SGG Promotions top honcho is brimming with confidence that his prized ward will successfully defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) World flyweight crown against Edwards even if the fight is held in the latter’s home soil on September 10.
Gello-ani, who has plotted the career of Casimero (22-3, 14KOs) since the latter’s early days in boxing, said that as his promoter he is very confident that his boxer will deliver the goods in his first fight in UK.
Gello-ani is anchoring this belief on Casimero’s dominating win against erstwhile IBF world flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng in their rematch last May in Beijng, China.
“This fight is Casimero’s choice and I believe that he will successfully hurdle this,” Gello-ani told CDN.
The 26-year old Casimero lost his IBF strap to Ruenroeng in their first match held last year in the latter’s home copuntry which is very notorious for hometown decisions.
Before that, the dynamite-fisted Leyteño successfully defended his belt three times.
Despite the confidence they feel, Gello-ani is still wary about Edwards’ guts to call out Casimero to fight him.
“Edwards is not a well known fighter yet but we take him seriously. As somebody who aspires to become a world champion, he is dangerous so we must never let our guards down. Although he is a virtual newcomer, that is not to say that he is an easy target. We know he wants to prove something to his home fans, and that makes him doubly dangerous,” added Gello-ani.
Edwards who holds a very young record of eight wins with three knockouts, has won two of his last bouts by unanimous decision.
He clinched the WBC International silver flyweight title by beating Luke Wilton. He is also the reigning English Flyweight champ.
Casimero’s trainer Jhun Agrabio revealed that Casimero has been training for three months already. They are set to fly for UK on September 4.
