SEAFARERS AS RESEARCHERS. The University of Cebu – Maritime Education and Training Center conducted a whole-day research proposal writeshop at its campus. Responsive to the demands of showing evidence for a strong research culture, the University of Cebu – Maritime Education and Training Center, through its General Education Department, conducted a whole-day research proposal writeshop for its marine transportation and marine engineering students on August 19, 2016 at the I-Building Amphitheater of the said campus in Mambaling, Cebu City.

Dr. Roselle Jardin-Ranario, Cebu Normal University professor, lectured on the requisites of research problematization, design, sampling and instrumentation. She delved specifically on the importance of choosing sensible issues to study and fitting titles to submit as key to success in thesis writing. A seasoned research adviser and a practitioner herself, Dr. Ranario also emphasized on the process of creating the research instrument, where she instructed the trainees to subject their outputs for a pilot testing after their adviser examined the facets of validity.

Gianne Rensen V. Antonio, Research adviser and the facilitator of the said writeshop, appraised the outputs of the trainees and instructed them to improve their manuscripts so as to prepare them for an upcoming proposal hearing. Prof. Antonio also provided the trainees helpful handouts on proper referencing and on the University’s research manual of style.

“Future seafarers need to appreciate Research as a way of life. Yours is a profession that exacts a high level of critical thinking and team working skills from its workers. Your vast industry is faced with various problems that require Research to be solved. We dream for maritime professionals who are research-oriented and who dream to solve those myriad maritime dilemmas,” Prof. Antonio quipped./PR
