The NKC Manufacturing Philippines Corporation in MEPZ II, Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City has demonstrated its continued support and commitment to the government’s National Greening Program (NGP).
Last September 24, 25 NKC employees headed by new company president Taiji Nishiinkyo and NKC Environmental officer Engr. Edmond Ouano trooped to Adlaon, a mountain barangay of Cebu City, to plant a total of 1,000 coffee trees.
The tree planting project is a joint undertaking of NKC with Pollution Control Association of the Philippines Inc. – Region 7, PCAPI-7 Foundation Inc., Cebu City government and Nestle Philippines together with the farmers in Adlaon.
The coffee tree planting project has been headed by Nishiinkyo since 2015.
The coffee trees were included in the NGP by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as viable tree species to help lessen the impact of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions.
As a landslide prone barangay, the planting of coffee trees will also help mitigate the soil erosion in Adlaon. The planting of coffee trees is also an opportunity for the farmers to grow coffee that can eventually help augment their income.
Coffee trees will start to bear fruits from 12 months onwards. The coffee fruits harvested by the farmers will be bought by Nestle Philippines for its coffee products.
As a non-stock, non-profit and non-government environmental organizations, the joint initiative of PCAPI-7, PCAPI-7 Foundation helps companies plant the trees required in its Environmental Compliance Certificate. For more information, PCAPI-7 can be contacted at (032) 2333604.
