The province’s search for a new jail warden of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPRDC) continues after a priest, who applied for the position, backed out.
Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III, who took over as acting CPDRC jail warden about three months ago, said yesterday that there are people recommended for the job, but he has yet to look into them.
Davide, however, said that Fr. Bartolome Sagadal, who applied for the position earlier, would have been fit for the job, but Sagadal backed out.
“Wala siya nidayon pero maayo unta siya. He was being considered gyud but wala man nidayon (He was being considered, but he did not push through with his application),” Davide said.
Sagadal was a former assistant director of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
“Maayo unta tong pari ba pero sige lang mangita ta og somebody. Hopefully, makakita gyud ta (It would have been okay if it was the priest. Hopefully, we can find someone who will be our warden),” Davide said.
Davide also announced his search for a jail warden after Bobby Legaspi, CPDRC assistant jail warden, went on an indefinite leave.
“(Legaspi) is on official leave. Sa pagkakaron ako gihapon ang warden, wala pa tay makit-an (As of now I am still the jail warden since we cannot find somebody to be the official warden of CPDRC),” Davide said.
Legaspi last reported on Sept. 28.
Davide said that Legaspi actually tendered his resignation, but he refused to accept it because Legaspi had been doing a great job as the assistant jail warden.
Davide took over as acting jail warden after Capitol Consultant on Jail Matters Marco Toral, and then CPDRC Jail Warden Romeo Manansala resigned when they were linked to a spate of jail incidents including one where eight inmates died of various ailments in a month.
Also last August, then Jail Warden Manansala said that the CPRDC, which was built to hold only 1,600 inmates, were holding 3,800 inmates.
Davide also assured jail rules and security would be still strictly implemented, and he would closely monitor the facility to make sure that this was being done.
