EXCITEMENT turned into disappointment for Jonas “Zorro” Sultan of ALA Boxing Gym as his title defense against fellow Filipino boxers Sonny Boy Jaro was cancelled.

Sultan was supposed to defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight belt tonight at the Makati Cinema Square but the former world champion reportedly fell ill.

According to ALA Boxing Gym trainer Edito Villamor, Jaro’s promoters from Shape Up Boxing Gym provided them a copy of Jaro’s medical certificate showing that he was unfit to fight.

Villamor said Jaro was suffering from Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and needed immediate medical attention.

“It was disappointing. I already made the weight,” said Sultan.

After learning the cancellation of the fight, Sultan decided to stay to support his stablemate Roli Gasca, who will be seeing action in the undercard against Richard Pumicpic.

The Sultan-Jaro duel was supposed to be the card’s main event.

Sultan said they were not informed by Jaro’s promoters if the fight will be rescheduled or not.

Sultan, a 25-year-old native of Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, trained for the fight for nearly three months as he expected tough fight against Jaro, who is a former WBC world flyweight champion.

Sultan has 12 wins, eight by knockouts, and three defeats. The veteran Jaro has already piled up 43 wins with 30 Kos, 13 defeats and five draws.
