THE 60TH edition of the Palarong Pambansa formally opens today at the Binirayan Sports Complex in Antique Province.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was invited to grace the opening ceremony of the weeklong multi-sporting event that showcases the country’s top secondary and elementary athletes.
Some games have started ahead of the formal opening ceremony as some venues will be used for multiple events.
Many-time defending champion National Capital Regional (NCR) remains as the team to beat while looking to give the Big City a run for its money is the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa).
Cviraa is gunning for a top-two finish after being a consistent fourth-place finisher in the annual competition.
Last year, Cviraa finished fourth with a harvest of 29 gold medals, 31 silvers and 29 bronzes.
Senior Education Program Supervisor Zenaida Gocotano has said Cviraa will only bid to host the Palaro if it finishes in the top two.
The Region 7 delegation is billeted at the University of Antique. The delegation is composed of at least 500 athletes, 255 of them from Cebu City.
Region 7 is manned mainly by athletes from Cebu City, which topped last February’s Cviraa Regional Meet in Naga City.
Cviraa is composed of 13 school divisions namely, Cebu City, Cebu Province, Tagbilaran City, Bohol Province, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Danao, Bogo, Carcar, Naga, Talisay, Toledo and Siquijor.
The Palaro will have the 25 regular events and three demonstration sports (dancesport, pencak silat, aero gymnastics).
