Cebuanos shine in Regent 5150 Tri

YOUTHFUL Cebuano triathletes Kim Remolino and Karen Andrea Manayon made instant impact as new members of the Rider Omega Pro Triathlon Team as they shone bright in the Regent 5150 Triathlon’s sprint distance in Subic Bay, Olongapo yesterday.

Remolino, a junior member of the Philippine Triathlon Team, bagged the 15-19 years old male division crown but not after some confusion.

Remolino ended the race in one hour, five minutes and 15 seconds. He was actually 15 seconds behind Julius Constantino but after review, it was found out that the Cebuano triathlete ran one extra loop compared to the other participants.

“One of the marshals committed an error because he instructed Kim to run another loop before he can head straight to the finish line.

We had a video that proved Kim was leading all the way before the marshal told him to do another loop in the run portion,” said Roland Remolino, Kim’s father and trainer.

Race officials went on to award the title to Remolino, while Constantino settled for second place. Juan Francis Baniqued came in third at 1:07.28.

Remolino ended up finishing second in the overall ranking, trailing Edward Macalalad, who timed 1:03.23.

Manayon, on the other hand, ranked second overall spot in the distaff side with a time of 1:11.35. She trailed Nicole Eijansantos, who clocked in 1:10.44, while Samantha Borlain finished third at 1:12.05.

The sprint distance had a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5k run. It served as the sub-category for the 5150 race.

In the full 5150 distance, Rider Omega Pro Tri Team’s ace athletes Paul Jumamil and Banjo Norte finished third and fifth, respectively.

Jumamil clocked in 2:10.19 in the division ruled by John Leerams Chicano, who timed 2:03.06.

Philippine team member Nikko Huelgas finished second at 2:06.19.

Norte, for his part, sealed his fifth-place finish by completing the race in 2:17.09. Jumamil and Norte’s teammate Cianyl Gonzales landed second in the 5150’s 20-24-year-old female division at 2:45.48 while Maria Infantado claimed the top spot at 2:45.48.

The 5150 distance has a 1.5k swim, 40k bike and 10k run.
