MARYJoy Tabal’s scheduled two-month training abroad will be cut short so she could deal with her reinstatement bid with the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (Patafa).
Tabal, who is scheduled to train in Tuscany, Italy and Saint Moritz in Switzerland, will return to Cebu a week earlier than scheduled, according to her handler Jonel Borromeo, president of MotorAce Philippines.
“Joy’s trainers from Italy and Japan as well as John Philip Dueñas all decided to cut her training shorter so that she can come back home to focus on her reinstatement,” said Borromeo. “She’s originally scheduled to fly back in Cebu on Aug. 9 but her coaches advised her to be back home a week earlier.”
Tabal’s trainers told Borromeo that even though they are cutting her training a week shorter, they will make sure that all the necessary training programs will be covered.
Regarding her status with Patafa, Borromeo said thay have yet to assess the conditions set by the federation for their prized marathoner to be reinstated. He said he and Tabal will meet with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Ramon Fernandez before they make their decision.
It can be recalled that Tabal was excluded from the national team roster for the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this August for allegedly violating some of Patafa’s rules and regulations.
Before leaving for Italy, Tabal sent a reinstatement letter to Patafa, which then set some conditions for the Olympian to be followed. This includes training in Patafa-designated training camps in Baguio and Manila and to train with a Patafa-designated national team coach.
The deadline for the final list of athletes for the SEAG will be on Thursday.
