Oscar Jereza Jr. V’ball Cup begins

Eight teams will look to test themselves in preparation for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season as they take part in the 1st edition of the Oscar Jereza Jr. Volleyball Cup today in the Oscar Jereza Jr. covered court at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Lahug campus.

Leading the competitors in this inter-school girls’ competition are the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu training pool squad, Southwestern University (SWU)- Phinma, University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and the home squad who will be parading two teams, USPF-A and USPF-B.

The Cesafi season starts in August.

Sports patron and tournament organizer Brian James Jereza said that his goal of putting up this competition is to not only give tribute to his late father Oscar Jr., whose birthday is on Sunday, but also to help address the problems of Cebu volleyball when it comes to the lack of tournaments.

“This will be just a one-weekend tournament to honor my father, whose birthday is on Sunday and we realized that after Shakey’s, there were no other tournaments, bitin kaayo,” said Jereza who is looking to add the boys,’ men’s and women’s divisions in the next editions.

Other teams who have confirmed their participation in the two-day tournament are the Saint Louis College-Cebu, Paref Southcrest and the Abellana National School.

The tournament will divide the teams into two groups with the top two teams after a single-round robin elimination advancing to the crossover semifinals.
