The University of the Visayas further solidified its stature as the best grassroots basketball squad in Cebu as the Baby Lancers swept the SBP and Passerelle titles Saturday at the expense of bitter rivals Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in the conclusion of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) Summer League at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue.
The Baby Lancers annexed the Passerelle title with a hard-earned 51-44 come-from-behind win. The SBP crown was won in wire-to-wire fashion, 40-28.
Ateneo de Cebu had the inside track on the victory as they led, 25-20, at halftime. But UV quickly turned the tables behind the efforts of Steve Nash Enriquez, Franc Gabunada and Franzel Basalo whose layup with 10 seconds left in the period put them in front, 36-32.
Chico Chan’s deuce pushed Ateneo de Cebu to within, 36-38, but UV slowly pulled away behind the clutch baskets of Enriquez, who scored a lay-up, completed a three-point play and added another basket to give UV a 43-36 lead.
Enriquez, Basalo and Melicor then put the finishing touches on the backbreaking 13-4 run to give UV the Passerelle championship. The aforementioned trio did the most damage for the boys in green as they each scored 10 points.
Nicael Cabañero led Ateneo de Cebu with 10 points.
In the SBP class, UV blitzed Ateneo de Cebu in the second period and never looked back to hoist the trophy.
Trailing, 7-8, UV held their rivals scoreless in the second period to surge in front, 15-8. Reezan Gonzaga, Vince Andrew Capao and Daniel Padilla then took turns making buckets to allow UV to firmly grab hold of the lead all the way to the final buzzer.
Padilla and Vaughn Olcarit had 10 each to guide UV to the title sweep.
