PREVENTING SUICIDE

A life lost is one too many. My thoughts to Kiane’s family and friends.

I am concerned of the comments made by an experienced mental healthcare professional regarding Kiane and suicide. The comments stigmatized Kiane as a person and misinformed the public about the nature of suicide.

Ms. Delgado painted a traumatized, confused, victimized, lonely, attention-seeking person. I do not know how much Ms. Delgado knew or if she even knew Kiane at all.

Ms. Delgado’s strong personal stance against suicide is admirable. She said suicide is wrong, should never be an option and never acceptable. But as a mental health professional, you seek to understand people who experience suicidal thoughts and act on them. You treat them with compassion and not condemnation.

Finally, Ms. Delgado’s advice are worthwhile, but they are not reflective of the complex nature of suicide. It is a very serious health concern, but with proper intervention, suicide can be prevented.

This is a comment that was posted in the feedback section of CDN’s story of Kiane Shannon Sophie Cañares who committed suicide on Facebook Live.
