It will be a wet weekend for Cebu with rains expected between Saturday and Sunday spawned by a low pressure area (LPA) spotted at 250 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan at 3 p.m. on Friday, the weather bureau said.
Jhomer Eclarino, weather specialist of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan, said the LPA will enhance the southwest monsoon (Habagat), bringing rains in Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas this weekend.
“Based on the (weather) model (like in Japan), it will develop into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours,” Eclarino said in a phone interview.
Once the LPA develops into tropical depression, it will be named ‘Fabian,’ the sixth tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this 2017.
A tropical depression has a maximum sustained winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour.
This weather system might affect extreme northern Luzon moving towards southeast of China and will exit PAR on Monday or Tuesday, Pagasa said.
“Here in Cebu, we will experience light to moderate rains which can cause floods and landslides,” Eclarino added.
Cebu has been experiencing intermittent rain since Thursday.
On Thursday, Pagasa Mactan recorded 176 millimeters of rainfall in Cebu. The normal average of rainfall in Cebu for July is 202.2 millimeters.
