A PROPOSAL by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña for freeports across the country that would exempt payment for customs duties drew mixed reactions from netizens.
Rey-Renee De Dios said, “This proposal from Mayor Tom is good and should be implemented. Those who try to steal from the people will be disciplined.”
Ida Laborte Martinez agreed, saying “They (corrupt officials) now have nothing to steal.”
But others like Bryan Abcxyz, are unsure. “This is impossible because the government collects a huge amount from these imported goods. Taking the tax away may only cause the Philippines worse poverty.”
Richard Ardines Tumulak said, “How about the competitiveness of local products? Our farmers will be greatly affected, as well as other local producers.”
