Ateneo de Cebu’s Velasco vows to be back stronger
A little over a month afte
r the gruesome injury that cost Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu standout Andrew Vincent Velasco his season, the promising two guard reports that his recovery is going according to plan.
The Magis Eagles guard said that he is already able to walk with the assistance of a walking cane, but remains cautiously optimistic that in time, he’ll be able to get back onto the floor and resume his burgeoning basketball career.
“The recovery’s going very well. In over a month I’m already walking just with the assistance of a walking cane, slowly gaining strength in my right leg,” said the recruit from Bacolod.
Velasco suffered the injury on Aug. 16 in a win against Don Bosco. He fractured his right tibia and fibula on a hard drive to the rack — an injury that saw the bone jut out of his skin, much to the horror of spectators and players alike.
Nevertheless, Velasco has taken the time to improve on other aspects of his physique, namely his upper body strength.
“I’ve also been able to focus on improving my upper body strength a lot. Overall, I believe that I’ll come back better, faster and stronger,” Velasco added.
However, Dr. Timothy Dejano, the Cesafi’s chief physician and an expert in rehabilitation medicine, said that Velasco remains a long way off from being able to play again.
“He’ll be back next year. Maybe a year after the injury,” said Dejano.
