A total of 89 persons donated blood during the bloodletting activity organized by the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port of Mactan last Saturday.

The bloodletting activity was spearheaded by Bureau of Customs Sub-Port of Mactan head Gerardo Campo, in coordination with Cebu Customs collector Elvira Cruz and 28 other partner organizations and establishments mostly from Lapu-Lapu City.

Presidential nephew Rey Duterte Abad, a friend of Campo who is based in Houston Texas, USA, was the guest speaker. He also donated blood.

Abad, in his speech, commended the blood donors for shedding blood to save others’ lives, and called them heroes.

“The great thing we have done is not only about donating blood but also saving the lives of other people,” said Abad.

He added that there are many people, especially the poor, who cannot afford to buy blood. The country still lacks blood supply, he said.

Campo expressed gratitude to all blood donors and the Philippine Red Cross for partnering with them during the activity.

“Dili lang kini alang sa atong kaugalingon apan ngadto usab sa mga makalolo-oy nga nagkinahanglan sa atong dugo aron mabuhi (This is not only for our own benefit, but for those pitiful individuals who need our blood in order to live),” he said.

“This is also what the Lord has commanded His people to love one another and be like our brother’s keeper,” he added.

Since Campo assumed as sub-port collector in Mactan four years ago, he had already initiated various outreach programs titled “BOC Cares” for the people of Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova.

The blood donors were served with lunch and snacks during the activity held at the Bureau of Customs Sub-Port of Mactan office near the Mactan Cebu International Airport.
