TO celebrate the 27th anniversary of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca), a cash-rich tournament will be held this weekend at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
The tournament is also held to honor the late “Father of Cepca” Frank “Boy” Pestaño. It will be dubbed the Boy “Chessmoso” Pestaño Open Chess Tournament.
Pestaño is one of the founding members of Cepca and a well known Cebuano chess patron who passed away last May.
Pestaño has been an instrumental in the success of Cepca through the years, helping the group become the longest existing chess organization outside of Metro Manila that is actively involved in the promotion and development of the sport at the grassroots level.
More than a hundred thousand pesos is at stake in the coming tournament. The tournament will have open, kiddies, ladies, Cepcans and 55-above divisions.
The open champion of the nine-round Swiss system tournament will walk away with a whopping P10,000. The second placer gets P7,000, third place
wins P5,000, fourth placer takes home P3,000 while the fifth placer will secure P2,000.
Registration fees are P300 for the open and 55-above, P200 for the Cepcans, and P150 for the ladies and kiddies divisions.
