NO TO FLYING BALLOONS AT THE BASILICA

Netizens are in agreement with the decision of the Augustinian fathers who run the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño to not allow the release of balloons at the church’s courtyard during the Sinulog Festival’s foot and fluvial processions.

Paul Vincent wrote: “This should have been implemented a long time ago. Samok kaau gud, it always gets caught sa trees and wire.”

Shanon Pimentel said releasing balloons is harmful to the environment and can cause power interruptions if these get entangled with electric wires.
“The church made the right decision. It’s harmful to the environment and can cause power interruption. We don’t want that during the duration of the fiesta.”

While Jaime Arresgado wrote: “This is a bold move, but highly appreciated! Amen!”

For the past six years, the Augustinian fathers have repeatedly appealed to the devotees of the Child Jesus to stop releasing balloons in the air that contain their prayers and petitions, but many did not head the appeal.
Next year, the Basilica management will strictly enforce a total ban on balloons at the church’s courtyard.
