CEBU’S Marc Nicole Suson made sure he’d avenge his loss to Dipolog City’s Stephen Zion Guia last year as he clinched the 18-Under Boys title of the 12th Cebuana Lhuillier Age-Group Tennis Championships – Cebu Leg yesterday at the Citigreen Tennis Resort Cebu.
The 16-year-old Suson scored an easy 6-3, 6-1, victory over Guia in the finals to secure his first title of the year.
He also exacted revenge against Guia, who beat him in the Citigreen Junior Tennis Cup 2017.
“I really trained hard for this because I really wanted to get back at him since he defeated me last year,” said Suson, who is ranked no. 4 in the country’s 18-Under Boys division.
Suson, a Grade 10 student of the University of Cebu (UC), said he trained as early as a week before the tournament to make sure he’d be prepared for a matchup with Guia.
Both netters have actually faced each other several times before with Suson winning 12 of those matchups and Guia winning twice.
On the distaff side, Carcar City’s Elizabeth Abarquez emerged champion with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fellow Cebuano Pherl Bless Coderos.
Three other Cebuanos also won the titles in their respective divisions.
Lapu-Lapu City’s Tiffany Claire Nocos (14-Under Girls), Pardo’s Aaron Kevin Tabura (10-Under Unisex), and David Ezra Sepulveda (8-Under Unisex).
Two netters from Lanao del Norte also won with Brent Sigmond Cortes of Tubod bagging two titles, the 14-Under Boys title and the 16-Under Boys title.
The other Lanao native who won was Heinz Aslan Carbonilla of Maranding, who ruled the 12-Under Boys division.
Other winners were Dumaguete City’s Shara Louise Paliwag (12-Under Girls) and Iligan City’s Rovie Baulete (16-Under Girls).
