NO SLOWING DOWN
Tagbilaran City — The Cebu City Niños continued to pull away in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet and there are no plans of easing up on the gas pedal in the remaining days of the competition.
Cebu City harvested 24 gold medals yesterday in various sporting events, improving its medal haul to 86-25-44 (gold-silver-bronze) as of press time.
Bohol Province is at far second with a 31-20-28 haul followed by Cebu Province (17-27-18).
Despite the lead, Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City division sports coordinator Francis Ramirez wants the team to stay fierce in the competition.
“We may be leading the medal standings but there is no room for complacency,” said Ramirez. “I always remind our athletes to stay focused because we still have two days of competition left. There are a lot of things that can happen along the way.”
If Cebu City wins the overall title on Friday, they will extend their reign to 26 years.
The gymnastics team of Cebu City again delivered another dominant performance, adding nine gold medals in the rhythmic gymnastics to finish their campaign with a total of 33 golds.
Cebu City’s taekwondo jins harvested five gold medals, the swimmers added five while three gilts came from its athletics team. The remaining two for the day came from girls’ basketball (5-on-5 and 3-on-3) teams.
Gold medalists for the gymnastics team were Leane Marie Manning Daniela Reggie dela Pisa and Marianne Alegado.
The gold medalists in taekwondo came from Cha Ynah Labiste (secondary girls flyweight), Mayn Yengelle Coran (secondary girls featherweight), Warren Jan Rama (secondary boys finweight), Charles David Labiste (secondary boys bantamweight), and Gabriel Niño Tenchavez (elementary boys category one).
In swimming, winners were Andrew Kim Remolino (secondary boys 800m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke and the 4×100 medley relay) and Mariel Estreba (secondary girls 200m backstroke).
