Q’final cast in Gov’s Cup hoops North Division complete

SAN FRANCISCO and Borbon defeated separate rivals to book quarterfinal berths in the North Division Bracket 2 of the Cebu Governor’s Cup 2018 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament last Saturday evening at the San Francisco Gym in Camotes Island.

San Francisco played solid game all-throughout the ball game to score an 85-51 win over Sogod in the main game while Borbon survived an end game scare to beat Poro, 75-73.

Catmon also scored 96-69 win over Tudela in the non-bearing opening game.

Both San Francisco and Borbon finished the elimination round with identical 4-1 (win-loss) cards. But by virtue of its 96-66 win over Borbon last May 24, San Francisco finished as the top team in the bracket and will pocket the P30,000 cash prize. Borbon will settle for the P20,000 runner-up award.

Both advance to the next round, where they will join other quarterfinalists Consolacion, Mandaue, Tuburan, Balamban, Medellin, and Bantayan.

In the South Division, there is still one slot left to be contested, which is from the Bracket 1. This will depend on the re play of the controversial game between defending champions Minglanilla Archangels and Naga City Electrifiers.

Naga City had won that game, 93-91, via buzzer-beating triple in the final 0.7 seconds last April 23 but the game placed under protest since six players were in for the Electrifiers during the last play.

The Commissioner’s office and the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission found Minglanilla’s protest valid and ordered a re-play of the game from the start of overtime.

The quarterfinalists for the south are Talisay City, Argao, Sibonga, Alegria, Ginatilan, Barili, and Dumanjug.
