GLOBALART National Art CoMPETITION
GlobalArt recently conducted its annual National Art Competition on September 23, 2018 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig, Metro Manila.
With 265 students who joined this year’s competition, it was a challenge for the 29 Globalart Cebu representatives to make a mark.
Nine-year-old Albyn Santino T. Lucernas was one of the Cebuanos who felt anxious about his performance. Lucernas participated in category B for students ages 7 to 9, which had the most number of contestants. Yet, with sheer creativity and determination, out of 98 contestants, Lucernas was declared the national grand champion.
This year’s competition theme was all about Celebrations. So, while the other contestants drew birthday parties and Christmas decorations, Lucernas decided to interpret his devotion to Señor Santo Niño on his artwork, making it stand out from the others. With the uniqueness of the Sinulog festival as his inspiration, Lucernas used bright colors and multiple layers in his composition.
“I listened to my teachers’ instructions and practiced at least two hours every day,” said Lucernas of his preparation for the competition.
As a Globalart Cebu student for two consecutive years, his parents said “Even at a very young age Lucernas has already showed interest in arts. That’s why, when we saw Globalart, we knew that it will develop his skills in drawing and coloring. Now, he can draw independently and blends colors very nicely. In fact, Globalart has also contributed to his discipline both in academics and in art subjects. He has now learned the value of time management by balancing his school and arts.”
When asked to whom he would attribute his victory, Lucernas said “To my parents, my grandma, and my mentors who supported me all the way, and above all to God.”
As the names of the top 3 best artworks were called out, Lucernas parents couldn’t keep their excitement and pride. And when he was named grand champion, tears started rolling down the faces of his parents.
