FIVE CEBUANO netters are left standing and will be vying for the titles in their respective divisions in today’s championship round of the Globe Citigreen Junior Tennis Cup 2018 at the Citigreen Tennis Resort.
Top seed Elizabeth Abarquez, a native of Carcar, Cebu, will be gunning for the 18 Girls title against Bohol’s Rica Trexie Gudelosao.
Abarquez advanced to the finals with a masterful 8-0 dismissal of Kimberly Sanchez while Gudelosao, currently based in Cebu as she is studying here, bagged her finals ticket with an 8-2 win over Jan Denise Camille Villar.
Tiffany Claire Nocos of Lapu-Lapu was also undeterred by the visiting netters as she claimed a finals entry in the 14 Girls. She has one more visitor barring her way for the title in Ormoc’s Mia Gemida.
Nocos bested Minette April Bentillo, 8-6, in the semifinals while Gemida stopped Angela Buyante, 8-3, in the Final 4.
In the boys division, Jude Carlo Balundo is the lone Cebuano who will be vying for a title via the 18 Boys.
Balundo upset two seeded players to get to the finals. First, he dismissed second seed Lorenz Anthony Celis, 8-4, in the quarterfinals then outsmarted third seeded Scottie Jumamoy in the semifinals.
Balundo will have his hands full as he will be contesting the title against top seeded Jose Maria Pague of Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte.
Pague had dismissed another Cebuano in Paul Helary Coderos, 8-2, to get to the final round.
Two other Cebuanos will be facing each other for the 8 Unisex title with top seed David Ezra Sepulveda set to face second-seed Chad Carlisle Cuizon.
Sepulveda ran roughshod over Arielle Buyante, 6-1, while Cuizon had to squeak past Pete Rafael Bandala, 6-5, in the semifinals.
