Earth is what we call “home.” Home is where we find a sense of belongingness and comfort. Because it is our safe place, we should be in the forefront of protecting and conserving it so that the next generation can still experience the good life on this planet.
Ironically, we are also Earth’s main enemy. We love single-used plastic, burn fossil fuels and waste resources like water. Many of us do not even think that these actions are dangerous to the planet and therefore, to us, being its residents.
“Climate change” and “global warming” are familiar terms that have been repeatedly said and written to drive the point that our home is “sick.”
Sadly, only a few listened.
For CDN Digital’s Earth Hour awareness campaign series, we share to you some reminders on how you can conserve energy especially in the area of saving on electricity. By heeding these five reminders, you can contribute in helping planet Earth breathe a little easier.
Use natural lighting. Maximize natural lighting by opening your windows and drawing your curtains at day time to let the sunlight come in your room. Being exposed to sunlight is also linked to your brain producing the hormone, serotonin, or the happy chemical that contributes to well-being and happiness.
Turn off unnecessary lights. In short, please stop being lazy and cut the habit of leaving lights on. Make it a routine to check all your lights before going to bed so you can conserve energy. Come to think of it: this should be the the simplest and easiest way to save energy. Think about what this will do to your monthly electric bill especially during the summer months.
Change your bulbs. Make sure that you buy the right bulb. An average household usage for lighting is 5 percent of its energy budget. Switching to LED bulbs is a money and energy-saving option. LED emits a small amount of heat and uses more than 75 percent less energy. It can also last for years.
Unplug unused appliances. Plugged appliances still consume energy even when you are not using them. Even the small electronic appliances such as chargers and hair dryers use up energy every time it stays plugged in. The term for this is “standby” electricity loss. This loss is not high enough to be felt by individual household but imagine how much energy is that when we aggregate all households!
If possible, replace old appliance to new models. It might be painful on your wallet in the short term but upgrading to new model will be worth the investment in the long run. When buying a new model, make sure to check the label. Check out its labelling standard and look for “energy guide” for your information and guidance.
Take your pledge to protect the planet five steps further with these five reminders. Earth Hour is happening on March 30, Saturday. Switch off your lights at 8:30 p.m. and be one with the world!
JUST. THREE. MORE. DAYS to #EarthHour 2019! While we fight against nature loss 🌎, we also have to work for a sustainable future. Share this if you’re going to switch off and speak up for #nature🌱
