Phoenix Building Systems, Island Paints beat foes

Cebu City, Philippines—Phoenix Building Systems and Island Paints raced off to the top of the league after winning their respective games in the Architects + Engineers Basketball Club 2019 Corporate Cup on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the University of San Carlos gym.

Phoenix routed Toyota Mabolo, 78-59, while Island Paints bested AVC Development and Construction Corp., 68-54. 

The two teams are tied for first place in the standings with identical 2-0 win-loss records.

Barn Rabaya led Phoenix with 23 points while Lawrence Gayotin put up 21 points, five rebounds and three assists in the game that was ultimately decided in the fourth period when the winning side outscored their opponents, 28-12.

On the other hand, Island Paints held AVC down to a mere three points in the first that paved the way for their lopsided win. Ralph Catugas led Island Paints with 15 points while Ryan Fabia added 14 markers and nine boards.

In other games, Thinking Tools, Inc. atoned for their opening day loss with a 90-51 decimation of Buildrite. Leonardo Solana had 11 points while Kim Rojas, Arnel Cordero and Patrick Paran each had 10 markers in the win.

Dormakaba-Filmon meanwhile, routed Davies Paints, 89-62. Justin Aspacio paced the winners with 14 points while Carlos Baltar added 13. /bmjo
