CEBU CITY, Philippines — Solo parents may soon avail of 10 percent discount in restaurants, cafes, canteens, and fastfood restaurants in Cebu City.
This may happen if Cebu City Council will pass the ordinance on Expanded Privileges to Registered Solo Parent.
Councilor Eduardo Rama Jr., who sponsored the proposed ordinance, told Cebu Daily News that the ordinance would be a form of incentive to the “hardworking” solo parents, who were placed in a circumstance that they would need to raise a child or children on their own.
“In normal households, there are two providers in the family, but in the case of the solo parents, there is only one. With this ordinance, we hope this can ease their expenses a little,” said Rama in a phone interview.
Rama said that a similar ordinance had already been passed in Quezon City, and received good response from its citizens and that Cebuanos should deserve similar privileges.
The ordinance is currently being studied at the Committee on Laws.
Rama said that he would be open to the expansion of the proposed ordinance to include more benefits in health, medicine, or perhaps infant items such as diapers or formula milk.
“The good thing about a proposal is that it can amended. We’ll see what the stakeholders can say about this (proposed) ordinance,” said Rama.
In the proposed ordinance in its current draft, only registered solo parents, who would have an identification card from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), could avail of the 10 percent discount.

However, Rama said that there might be regulating measures similar to the P5,000 financial assistance the city would provide for solo parents.
To avail of the financial assistance from the city, solo parents must be a voter of the city for the last three elections.
Rama said that it might not exactly follow the regulations of the solo parent financial aid.
He said there would surely be a regulating mechanism for the privileges should the proposed ordinance be passed.
Rama said he was hoping that the public would support the ordinance in order to provide more privileges and assistance to the solo parents in the city./dbs
