Cop shoots rob suspect in chase

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was shot and wounded by a policeman who tried to arrest him after a cellphone theft  yesterday  in barangay Guizo, Mandaue City.

Marloue Sorono allegedly drew a firearm that forced PO1 Vimarl Evardo to shoot him.

Sorono was hit in the buttocks and was taken to the Mandaue City Hospital for treatment.

Sorono, a resident of sitio Sta. Cruz, barangay Guizo, Mandaue, was accused of robbing Gilbert Abong, a 28-year-old driver of a restaurant in Cebu City.

Abong, a resident of barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue, said he was driving an L300 van and had stopped for a   traffic light.

Abong said while he was waiting for the traffic light to turn green, a man, who was later identified as Sorono, appeared.

Abong said Sorono poked a gun at him and declared a hold-up.

Sorono allegedly took Abong’s cell phone worth P6,000 and fled.

Abong saw two policemen at the street corner, PO1 Evardo and PO1 Peter Chuan Martinez at the corner of A.C Fortuna and M.C. Briones Streets and sought their help.

The two policemen gave chase until they cornered Sorono.

Police that said instead of yielding, Sorono  drew a gun and tried to shoot the two policemen.

A robbery case will be filed today against  Sorono.

He was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City for further treatment, police said.
