The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers routed the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 80-49, in a heated game in the ongoing 7th Mandaue Mayor’s Cup basketball tournament yesterday at the Mandaue Cultural and Sports Complex.
The Green Lancers logged their second victory in as many games to take the top spot in group B. They have the same record with Southwestern University (SWU), which leads group A.
UV will be facing the winner between Raphael’s Cafe and the National University, which was still going on at press time, in today’s semis. The other semis pair pits the Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
Although the game was a rout, UV had to deal with several heated moments against UC.
UV’s offense was steady from the opening tip to the final buzzer, with Raffy Octubre leading the team early with 11 markers, all scored in the first half.
Octubre failed to finish the game as he was ejected from the game after getting involved in a melee with UC’s Thirdy Miranda in the third period. Miranda allegedly punched Octubre after both players engaged in a physical play while fighting for ball possession.
Another set of players were also ejected at the 7:59 mark of the fourth period after UV’s rookie JV Veloso hit Carlos Tabaquero while also battling for ball possession.
Despite the physicality of the game, the Green Lancers managed to keep their composure on offense, building huge leads that put the game away from UC’s reach.
Leonard Santillan scored six of his 12 points in the fourth period that helped UV log the easy win. Cameroonian import Jean Marie Mpouma had a subpar performance, scoring just five points.
Kenneth Niones and Kim Gomez scored eight and seven points, respectively, for the losing squad. /with reports from Jonas Panerio
