The body’s defenses against microbes and viruses

Natural barriers and the immune system defend the body against organisms that can cause infection.

Understanding how our body works helps us stay fit and fight against possible infections.

As well as the immune system, the body has several other ways to defend itself against microbes, including:

Eyelashes

The fine hairs that grow at the eyelid perform several functions. Even though they are often regarded as an emphasis on beauty, their primary function is to protect the eyes from small particles such as dust, sand or debris from entering and harming the eye.

Tonsil

The tonsils are part of the body’s immune system. Because of their location at the throat and palate, they can stop germs entering the body through the mouth or the nose.

The tonsils also contain a lot of white blood cells, which are responsible for killing germs.

Nose hair

your nose hairs play an important role in keeping you healthy. And there’s a very good reason why you shouldn’t pluck them out.

are responsible for keeping some of the larger particles from making it that far. If you pluck those hairs, germs and particles near the follicles can get inside and cause an infection.

Saliva

Saliva is an important part of a healthy body. It is mostly made of water, but it helps in fighting germs in your mouth and prevents bad breath.

Tears

Foreign bodies that enter the eye are washed out by tears. Moreover, tears contain a substance called lysozyme, which has an antibacterial action and works to prevent invasion and infection by microbes.

Earwax

has several important jobs. First, it protects and moisturizes the skin of the ear canal, preventing dry, itchy ears. Second, it contains special chemicals that fight off infections that could hurt the skin inside the ear canal.

Finally, it acts as a shield between the outside world and the eardrum. When dust, dirt, and other things enter your ear, the earwax traps them so they can’t travel any further.
