Workers terminated by the University of San Carlos administration may be reinstated provided they get trained and certified as plumbers and electricians, the leader of the staff union said.
According to Juberito Contratista, president of the USC General Services Union, said this possibility came out during their mediation meeting with the university administration last Wednesday which was called after the workers staged a demonstration at the gates of the Talamban campus which temporarily disrupted classes.
He said they’re expecting the administration to reconsider their decision shutting down the university’s General Services Office.
Contratista, a painter, said the concern over the terminated workers’ competence and proficiency were among the issues raised by the administration.
“If it’s about proficiency, almost all of us have rendered service to the school for more than 20 years, but we agreed that all 16 of us are going to be reinstated to the same position, but eventually (we) have to undergo training to become certified plumbers and electricians since we are mostly painters and carpenters,” he said.
The workers expect the administration to come up with a decision on Tuesday, a day before they sit down again for a meeting.
