CEBU CITY, Philippines— It was nine years ago today when panic gripped the entire Cebu island.
Why? A 6.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Cebu and Negros.
As if the tremors were not enough, Cebu was put into more panic when someone was calling out for his daughter “Chona Mae.”
Which sounds like tsunami.
This was when the chaos, the running, and the screaming began.
It was a Monday when everyone was running in the streets of Cebu because of the hoax that a tsunami was about to smash the island after the quake.
The water level was allegedly rising and that a huge wave will soon hit downtown Cebu.
Today, as we look back at this infamous event in Cebu with a grin. Let’s hear from our ka-Siloys what were some of their unforgettable, “Chona Mae” experience.
After nine years, we can still vividly remember the screaming and the laughing at the end of the day when we all realized that there was no tsunami, but only a father looking for her daughter “Chona Mae.”
