LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu—The Lapu-Lapu City Government is targeting to establish 20 Water Tank Fire Protection System (WTFPS) in highly congested areas here.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said that the project is under the resiliency program of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO).

Under the WTFPS, each community will receive a water tank, water pump, water hose, and nozzle, while residents will be trained to establish a fire fighting brigade.

“We’ll train the people in the area as firefighters,” the mayor said, adding that these community fire brigades will be the first to respond in case of fire.

Chan said that in every community, they will train 20 individuals to respond to fire incidents.

According to Chan, the city has collaborated with the University of the Philippines (UP) in identifying hazard-prone areas, especially those that are at risk of fire.

Each set of WTFPS is worth P500,000. THe city has allocated P10 million for the project.

Currently, Chan said that five permanent water tanks were already built in Sitio New Paradise in Barangay Pajo; Barangay Looc; Barangay Kalawisan; and Sitio Masulog and Sitio Sto. Niño Village in Barangay Basak.
