LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – Some 170 ambulant vendors in Lapu-Lapu City, who were affected by the clearing operations in the city’s sidewalks, were given a temporary area where they can continue their livelihood.

Earlier, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) ordered local government units (LGUs) to clear the sidewalks from obstructions.

This includes illegal structures and ambulant vendors who sell their goods on the sidewalks.

“Di sab ta gusto nga mawad-an sila ug panginabuhian kay panahon baya ron sa pandemya,” Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said.

On Saturday, February 13, 2021, Chan opened the city auditorium in Barangay Poblacion where vendors affected by the clearing operation can sell their goods temporarily.

“Since wala paman gitugot ang contact sports, sama anang basketball, maong didto sa nato sila gipahiluna,” he added.

Annabeth Cuizon, head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), also said that the move could also generate income for the city since it can also collect taxes (arcabala) from these vendors.

Cuizon, however, reminded the vendors to maintain the cleanliness in the area. /rcg
