DR. Cris Abbu had been a physician for almost 20 years in the hospital.

“Buotan kaayo na si Doctor Abbu, daghan kaayo na og “pro-bono” free surgical operation’, said Ryan Aznar, barangay Sambag 2 councilor and property custodian of SWU. (Doctor Abbu was a very good man. He helped many people with free surgical operations.)

He said the security guards didn’t bother frisking Wilfredo Sabonsolin because he was a regular patient.

In a press statement, SWU said the university “is one with the family of Dr. Cris Cecil Chan Abbu in mourning his untimely loss.”

Abuu was married to Dr. Amelia Escobar Abbu and was a “true-blue Southwesterner” who completed his degree as doctor of medicine and bachelor of laws in SWU.

“His commitment to his Alma Mater was best expressed in his conscientious and humanist practice of medicine. His tragic demise will never erase his valuable contributions as an outstanding orthopedic surgeon in Sacred Heart Hospital and a faculty member of the College of Medicine and College of Rehabilitative Sciences.”

SWU will full cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.

Jane Hermosisima, one of his staff in the rehabilitation clinic, and clinical instructor Rolando Garcia described Dr. Abbu as a generous man with a positive outlook who was fond of laughing and cracking jokes.

“All of us here would agree that he had a good heart. He will be terribly missed,” said Hermosisima.

Garcia, on the other hand, said the doctor would often buy snacks for the staff when he reported to the hospital every Monday and Thursday.

Most of his cases were charity or pro bono cases.

“He would do them for free. If a patient couldn’t pay him, he wouldn’t force him. We lost a dear friend and colleague,” said Garcia.

Dr. Abbu also offered his services as a consultant at the Seaman’s Hospital, Cebu City Medical Center and the Lapu-Lapu District Hospital. /Apple Ta-as and Reporter Aileen Garcia Yap
