5 jail guards with drug links named

FIVE jail guards of the Cebu Provincial Detention Center (CPDRC) were linked to the trafficking of illegal drugs inside the correctional facility.

Provincial Jail warden Romeo Manansala said the guards were identified by fellow jail personnel on the day the drugs and paraphernalia were found in the possession of one of the inmates.

Gov. Hilario Davide III said he wants them tested for drug use.

“They need to be tested. The security inside the facility is crucial,” Davide said.
He said he has yet to receive the CPDRC report.

Manansala said the guards are being investigated. “Most of the guards here are good. That’s why it’s easy for us to identify those who are otherwise,” he said.

The warden said unscrupulous people took advantage of the security slack and managed to sneak in contraband into the jail facility.

“But the guards only do check-ups for compliance. It’s like they’re not comfortable with doing thorough inspections like frisking,” he said.

While Manansala said he will file charges against the five guards should the allegations be proven true, Davide III said the case should be referred to the Committee on Discipline and Investigation (CODI).

Last July 30, jail officials confiscated illegal drug paraphernalia from two inmates after the authorities were tipped off that one of the cells was a source of illegal drugs. /With USJ-R Intern Zonah Mae K. Perez
