CEBU CITY, Philippines — Kristina Belano bagged her fifth weekly tournament title this year after dominating the Group B Arena category of last Sunday’s Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) weekly online chess competition.
Belano, the 12-year old Cebuana chess prodigy who topped the 2020 National Age Group Chess Tournament, dominated the arena-system competition by scoring 34 points.
Belano also topped last July 4’s edition in the same category.
Last Sunday, she bested older and more experienced woodpushers Leo Lofranco who finished second with 28 points, and Jerica Catulay who settled for third with 27 points.
Maria Kristine Lavandero placed fourth with 24 points while Norman Martin Olayvar landed at fifth place with 23 points.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Ty bagged back-to-back wins in the all-Cepcans category. The 35-year old Ty also ruled the category last July 4.
This time, he scored a near-perfect 10.0 points after 11 rounds of Swiss system chess action.
Belano trailed him at second place with 9.5 points while National Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez Jr. of the Toledo City Trojans rounded off the top three with 8.5 points.
Lincoln Yap grabbed fourth place with 7.5 points and Michael Tinga salvaged fifth place with 6.5 points. /rcg
