CEBU CITY, Philippines — The late Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella was awarded the highest honor in his city.

During the celebration of the 85th Charter Day, February 24, 2022, Mayor Michael Rama conferred to Labella posthumously the Order of Rajah Humabon, the highest award an individual can get for the service to Cebu City.

Bryner Diaz, the head of the City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office (CHAO), said the service the late mayor gave to the city until his death merits him such honor.

“In recognition of his exemplary contribution and service to the City of Cebu as councilor, vice mayor, and sitting Mayor at the time of his death,” said the Order of Rajah Humabon award conferred to Labella.

Labella died on November 19, 2021, after battling pneumonia and cancer for some time. He died of septic shock leaving the city under the hands of the then-vice mayor, Rama.

Former city administrator, Floro Casas, Jr., posted on Facebook his gratitude to the city government for conferring the award to the late mayor, for which he served as city administrator since 2019.

“Thank you Cebu City Government & Mayor Michael Rama for the Order of Rajah Humabon Award (posthumous) in recognition of the late Mayor Edgardo C. Labella’s exemplary contribution and service to the City of Cebu,” said Casas.

Casas, himself, was awarded as the Most Outstanding Public Servant during the Testimonial Dinner on the evening of February 24, 2022.

Rama said that the awards for Charter Day were given in consideration that he is finishing the term of Labella.

“We should consider that this is the term of our mayor, Edgardo Colina Labella. We want to look into the achievements of the city for the past year and what the people he would have considered for the award,” said Rama in a previous statement.
