Casas behind cyberlibel case against Alcover

Casas cyberlibel

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Former Cebu City administrator, Floro Casas, Jr., has filed the cyberlibel case against former councilor, Pastor “Jun” Alcover, Jr. as confirmed by a court document obtained by CDN Digital from Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 11.

Alcover, who is running for councilor of the North District, has already posted bail of P20,000 for the two counts of cyberlibel he is facing.

He is already awaiting his release after being arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) on the evening of March 3, 2022.

Alcover said that he was shocked that Casas, an ally of Partido Barug and chairperson of Panaghiusa, has filed charges against him.

He admitted that they had differences in the past, but all was settled even before Mayor Edgardo Labella died. This case was something he did not expect at all.

“Wa ko kahibalo unsay motibo ani. Before buhi pa si Labella, nasuko to siya nako pero nasettle man to. Nagconference mi ug nahilom nalang tanan,” said Alcvoer.

The former councilor now leaves to his lawyers the case that will continue in the court after he posted bail. Alcover could not say if the case was politically motivated or not, but he intends to find out.

CDN Digital reached out to Casas for comments, but he has yet to respond to calls and texts.

Police Major Mark Eteroza of the CIDG-7, said that they implemented the warrant of arrest based on the order of Honorable Judge Ramon Bueno Daomilas, Jr., who presides over the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 11 in the city.

Esteroza added that the arrest could not say if it was politically motivated since they were only implementing the order of the court.

He also said that Alcover was also shocked by the charges and they also could not divulge who filed the case at that time.
