CEBU CITY, Philippines — The body of a 12-year-old girl was retrieved on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, a few kilometers away from where she was last seen swimming in the river in Barangay Can-asujan, Carcar City.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Ardioleto Cabagnot, chief of Carcar City Police Station, identified the victim as Jendie Paran, a resident of Sitio Oliveros, Barangay Can-asujan, Carcar City.

Paran was retrieved around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, in Inayagan, Barangay Tuyom, approximately six to seven kilometers away from Barangay Can-asujan.

According to Cabagnot, Paran was with other four children swimming in the said river around 3 p.m. on Monday, July 25. However, due to continuous downpour in the mountain barangays at that time, Paran was carried away by rushing waters of the river.

Her four other companions were able to leave before the incident happened.

It took at least 15 hours before the searchers retrieved the body of the girl. Residents saw the girl’s body snagged in some wood branches in the river bank in Inayagan.

Personnel from the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Bantay Dagat helped in the operation to find the girl’s body.

With this incident, Cabagnot reminds the public to be careful in swimming in the rivers, especially if the weather is not good as this could result to flash floods.
