IM Pimentel tops Cepca-Closap chess tournament

CEBU CITY, Philippines—International Master (IM) Joel Pimentel ruled the inaugural Cepca-Closap Make a Move Against Drugs Open Chess Tournament  on Sunday evening, December 11, 2022, held at a mall here.

IM Pimentel finished the nine-round Swiss system competition with a total of 8.0 points to win it all and pocket the P7,000 champion’s purse. 

Diego Caparino finished second followed by Allan Pason and Anthony Makinano at  third and fourth places, respectively. 

Caparino, Pason, and Makinano each scored 7.5 points, but they were ranked according to their tie-break points. Caparino received P5,000, while Pason got P3,000. Makinano won P2,000.

The tournament was co-organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) and City of Lapu-Lapu Office of Substance Abuse and Prevention (Closap).

Besides the winning wood pushers, the organizers also recognized the top female performer, Kristine Lavandero, who was also the tournament’s top player in the 14-under girls.

John Jacob Pane, was named the top player for the 14-under boys. 

The rest of the awardees were National Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez Jr. (Top Cepcan A), Ruel Hortelano (Top Cepcan B), Reynaldo Flores (Top Senior), John Allego (Top 10-under boys), and Micah Cadenas ( Top 10-under girls). 

A total of 130 wood pushers took part in the one-day tournament aimed at raising awareness against drugs through Closap’s programs. 

It also served as Cepca’s second over-the-board chess tournament since the pandemic.
