CebuDoc Group unveils Center for Advanced Nutrition

If you are having difficulty with weight loss or gain, or going through a period of recovery from illness, the Center for Advanced Nutrition (CAN) from CebuDoc Group may be able to offer assistance.

The new center, which is the first multi-disciplinary nutrition intervention center in the region, offers seven major services, which include:

According to CAN chair Dr. Karen Woolbright, its latest equipment, namely Indirect Calorimetry and the Body Water Analyzer 2.0, produce the most accurate nutrition prescription and provide the most suited nutrition support.

Body Water Analyzer 2.0 is a professional body water analyzer that can help address the need for precise measurement in monitoring body composition and change for nutritional evaluation. This machine, which is the first in the Philippines, can test patients at any given position whether through standing or sitting, making it most useful for patients with limited mobility.

Meanwhile, the Indirect Calorimetry, said to be the first in the Visayas and Mindanao, measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production that can help optimize the nutritional support in metabolic disorders and measure a patient’s energy needs.

For those interested to avail of CAN’s services, they can visit the center at the 5th floor of Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital Medical Arts Building 2 along Gov. M. Roa Street in Cebu City.

“The two most common issues that Filipinos are struggling with are proper diet and nutrition for non-communicable diseases, and proper nutrition intervention among the sick and hospitalized patients,” said Woolbright.

Instead of treating nutrition as a “last resort,” the newly launched CAN intends to prioritize nutrition for both healthy individuals who want to prevent illnesses, and more importantly to sick patients who want to improve their conditions though medically-backed nutrition evaluation and meal plans.

Dr. Maricel Malazarte, Vice Chair of CAN, highlighted the importance of providing nutrition support for patients post-admission to the hospital. She pointed out that this extra support can help them to have a faster and smoother recovery process.

Additionally, she warned patients against using herbal supplements in the market today without consulting a healthcare provider as this could lead to unexpected and potentially dangerous side effects.

With the latest developments around the CebuDoc Group, its president and chair Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal  is hopeful that with the launching of its newest facility, the Center for Advanced Nutrition, CebuDoc will become a leading provider of nutrition for patients who are no longer in a hospital setting yet need ongoing recovery at home.

A report released by an international non-profit, Nutrition International, has revealed the high prevalence of malnutrition plaguing the Philippines with high levels of wasting, stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight cases among children and women. The economic costs of not intervening is estimated to be close to USD $4 billion every year – a cost that could be drastically reduced with targeted interventions from both public and private sectors.

For those interested to avail of CAN’s services, they can visit the center at the 5th floor of Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital Medical Arts Building 2 along 2 Gov. M. Roa Street in Cebu City.
