Motorists overspeeding in SRP to be penalized

Motorists who overspeed in the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) will be apprehended soon.

For now, the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) is “exercising maximum tolerance” and informing the public about the new speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour, said Citom operations chief Joy Tumulak.

Violators will be fined P500 to P1000.

Citom and Land Transportation Office (LTO) personnel distributed flyers to motorists about the change.

Vehicular accidents in the SCR reach 250 a year prompting Mayor Michael Rama to threaten announce a lower speed limit last week and threaten

The speed limit is 40 kph under  City Ordinance 801 or the Traffic Code of Cebu City. This applies to passenger vehicles, cars and motorcycles passing through highways, national and city roads.

Citom announced a lower speed limit last week as Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama warned that he would close the road  to motorcycles, which make up almost half of the accidents, if the trend continues.

Starting 9 a.m. yesterday, Citom and staff of the Land Transportation Office  were stationed in accident-prone areas in the SRP — Talisay-Cebu City boundary, El Pardo Junction, Sugbo building intersection and Mambaling junction and Ludo bridge.

They handed out flyers and started calling the attention of over-speeding motorists .

“Because we don’t have speed guns, we used Citom vehicles and had them run at a constant speed of 40 kph. Those who overtook the vehicle meant they went past the speed limit,” Tumulak said.
