CEBU City Councilor Nida Cabrera said she will file next week a proposed ordinance for electronic waste management to deal with used batteries and discarded electronic gadgets tossed in the trash.
In a speech to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) at the Hotel Elizabeth, Cabrera said she partnered with the Cebu Common Treatment Facility Inc. (CCTFI) and Cebu E-Resource Recovery, Inc. (CERRI) to frame the policy.
As part of an ongoing pilot project in selected malls and households, old batteries and discarded cellphones are being collected in recovery boxes then delivered to CCTFI and CERRI for proper treatment by Nippon Magnetic Dressing Co. Ltd.
Under the new policy, Cabrera said they want to have private waste collectors, barangays and scrap buyers to be accredited.
“The policy will cover household and company e-wastes that are collected by registered barangay materials recovery facilities (MRFs), registered junk shops and registered companies.”
Another facility where the collected e-waste can be treated is also being proposed.
“Hopefully we can get approval for the facility to be located at the area near CCTFI,” she said.
