Mandaue shooting

A sales agent playing a mobile game was shot dead in Mandaue City in the early hours of Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A still unidentified gunman killed a 36-year-old sales agent while he was playing a multiplayer battle arena game on his smartphone with his friends in Mandaue City on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

Police in Mandaue City confirmed that a shooting took place in Brgy. Tipolo, Mandaue City around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

They identified the victim as Chris Evert Lloyd Eduria, 36, from Bantayan Island. Eduria temporarily lived in Mandaue City, where he worked as a sales agent for a telecommunications company.

Based on initial findings from the police, Eduria and two of his friends spent the night last Tuesday drinking and playing an online mobile game.

Suddenly, the gunman approached them and reportedly asked the victim why he wasn’t sleeping yet, said Police Chief Master Sergeant Ricardo Petiluna, investigator from the Subangdaku Police Station.

Then the suspect pulled out his gun, prompting Eduria to stand up and wrestle the weapon from the suspect. A scuffle eventually ensued, with the victim and suspect fighting over the gun until the two damaged a nearby door.

There, the gunman managed to get a grip of his gun and fired towards Eduria, who sustained a gunshot wound on his left chest.

The suspect then fled the area while the victim managed to walk a few meters before collapsing on the ground. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival.

Personal grudge?

While investigators continue to determine the identity of the suspect, Petiluna said personal grudge may have been his motive for killing Eduria.

According to the police official, their initial background check on Eduria revealed that the victim recently got involved in a tension in his previous residence.

“Mag sige na siya ug balhin-balhin ug area. Unya kas-a naay gamayng bikil sa area sa iyahang gipuy-an,” he said.

(He kept transferring. There was once, he had a little conflict in an area where he used to live.)

Police also believed that Eduria may have recognized the suspect.
